The Knockout Final

WELL DONE to the Rugby Club ‘A’ who came out on top in the final of the League Knockout Competition – defeating East Linton BC by a convincing 6 games to 1. (edit - the final scoreline didnt reflect how close a final it acctually was, well in most games!)

Finals Night

Finals Night was held in the Rugby Club on Monday 29th March with the last eight in each competition playing to a finish. CONGRATULATIONS to the Singles Winner Colin Cunningham (Auld Hoose) who beat his team mate, Brad Chisholm, by 4 legs to 3 in the final. The beaten semi-finalists were Graeme Bell (East Linton) and Jim Arthur (Auld Hoose)

CONGRATULATIONS also to the Pairs Winners Ronnie Anderson & Willie Whellans (Rugby ‘A’) who also beat their team mates, Alan Naylor & Jim Gibson by 4 legs to 3 in the final. The beaten semi-finalists were Derek Aytoun & Craig Burn (Rugby ‘A’) and Paul Campbell & George Learmonth (County ‘A’).

Lothian Super League

The 2010 Lothian Super League Play-off was held on Saturday 3rd April at Easthouses Miners Club. Sadly our League could only raise seven players on the day plus one guest player from Edinburgh. Consequently this resulted in what was probably our worst showing to date in the event. It was surely soul destroying for the players who played to know that they went into each match with a 2 – 0 deficit – this against good opposition in each case. Whilst I understand it was the Easter weekend and some players had work and other commitments surely from the amount of players signed for the League a full complement of decent standard players could have attended.

WELL DONE to those who did attend.
For the record the scores were as follows: Bonnyrigg ‘B’ 6 North Berwick 4
North Berwick 2 Dunbar 8
North Berwick 1 Bonnyrigg ‘A’ 9
Bonnyrigg ‘C’ 10 North Berwick 0
Bonnyrigg ‘B’ won the Competition

Jim Orde Memorial

The inaugural playing of the Jim Orde Memorial Singles took place at East Linton Bowling Club on Saturday 20th March. Around 40 players entered which is most encouraging and I’m sure the competition will go from strength to strength in the years to come. This year’s winner was J. Knox (Winton) who defeated Willie Whellans (Rugby ‘A’) by 4 legs to 1 in the final.

The League Pairs

The League Pairs Qualifying Rounds were played off on Monday 8th February in the Golfers Rest and Quarterdeck. Four pairs from each venue qualified for the Pairs/Singles Finals Night on Monday 29th March at the North Berwick Rugby Club

Qualifiers:

Golfers Rest
Alan Naylor & Jim Gibson (Rugby ‘A’)
Ally Lauder & Dan McGinley (Rugby O50)
Derek Aytoun & Craig Burn (Rugby ‘A’)
Graeme Bell & Tom Penny (East Linton BC)

Quaterdeck
Ronnie Anderson & Willie Whellans (Rugby ‘A’)
Russell Beck & Karen Smith (Golfers ‘B’)
Paul Howson & Ian Steel (County ‘A’)
Paul Campbell & George Learmonth (County ‘A’)

The Rugby Club ‘A’ will be represented by three pairs in the finals with the County ‘A’ getting two pairs through and one each from the Rugby Club O50, East Linton BC and the Golfers Rest ‘B’ making up the last eight. Somewhat surprisingly no qualifiers from either the Auld Hoose or Aberlady BC. A special well done to Russell Beck and Karen Smith on their qualification – they doing very well to eliminate two Auld Hoose pairs on the way. Five 180s were scored on the night as well as a new High Checkout – all detailed on page 1.
